Emily Ting
Emily Ting

Emily Ting studied filmmaking at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Her first work upon graduation was the short film Unbound Feet (2001), about a Chinese woman’s reaction to her daughter wanting to get a divorce. It became a finalist at the 2002 Zoiefilm Festival, and was also shown at the Chicago Asian American Film Festival. Her film company Unbound Feet Productions was also founded in 2001 and is named after this first short film. Ting worked for several years at the documentary distribution company Docurama in New York. She also turned towards making her own documentaries. Her first feature-length documentary was What’s Love Got to Do with It? (2002), a look at arranged marriages as practiced within the American-born Desi community. She also made a documentary short about college graduates facing unemployment entitled Reality Check (2006). In 2007, Ting found herself being requested by her father to return to Hong Kong in order to learn how to run the family business, a sprawling toy manufacturing empire. She complied but chose to document the process in her intimate film, Family Inc. (2008). Ting’s feature-length drama, Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong (2014), is set in Hong Kong and stars Hollywood actors Jamie Chung and Bryan Greenberg. Her latest directorial project for Netflix, Talk Girl 2, is in post-production.
