Stephen, Mary – Critical Biography  Top

Mary Stephen

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mary Stephen first learned about European cinema and the French New Wave through the pages of The Chinese Student Weekly – a popular cultural periodical of the 1950s and 1960s – with its film reviews and annotations by such noted critics as Law Kar and Sek Kei. Stephen fell in love with the films of Truffaut and Resnais, and later chose to study Communication Arts when she moved to Montreal, Canada. At university, Stephen became drawn to the experimental and surrealistic aspects of Maya Deren’s avant-garde films as well as the writings of Anaïs Nin. Upon graduation, she began to make and edit her own films before making the acquaintance of French New Wave director Éric Rohmer. Rohmer invited Stephen to work as an assistant to his chief editor, and eventually Stephen took over and became Rohmer’s regular editor and collaborator. She edited his films up to his death in 2010 (the last feature they worked on together was The Romance of Astrea and Celadon, released in 2007). In recent years, Stephen has worked as editor on numerous mainland Chinese and Hong Kong productions, including Li Yang’s Blind Mountain (2007), Fan Lixin’s documentary Last Train Home (2009), Freddie Wong’s Liu Yichang adaptation The Drunkard (or Jiu Tu, 2010), Jessey Tsang’s documentary Flowing Stories (2014), and Amos Why’s indie feature Dot 2 Dot (2014).
