Chan, Cassandra – Critical Biography  Top

Cassandra Chan is a Hong Kong independent filmmaker originally from Singapore. She graduated from Cornell University in 2001, where she received a B.A. in Biology, with a concentration in Law & Society, before continuing on with a JD in Law at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. She worked in Hong Kong in various journalism posts, before establishing Slate Takes Ltd., a self-described “boutique visual media production company” in 2009, where she is currently a producer, director, and cinematographer. The company’s portfolio ranges widely from TV commercials and corporate videos to documentaries and films. She has also worked in the production teams of some Hollywood blockbusters, such as Transformers 4 (2014) and Contagion (2011). Her documentary work about Hong Kong’s subcultures includes Tagspotting (Hong Kong’s graffiti art scene, 2006); Outing Hong Kong (the experiences of gays and lesbians in Hong Kong, 2007); and Spring Blossom 2007 (feature length documentary about Hong Kong high school students on a charity expedition to a primary school in Heilongjiang, 2008).

In addition, Slate Takes Ltd.’s web travel series entitled The Vagabond Project (2012) won the Webby Award in the Travel & Adventure category in 2013. Chan was also associate producer for Verax, the short film based on Edward Snowden’s story that was released on Youtube in June 2013, and gained critical attention and praise. Her most recent work is Sino Philes, a mockumentary microfilm web series and short film about the ongoing social conflicts between Hong Kongers and Mainlanders. From issues revolving around cross-border tourism and right of abode to the “Umbrella Movement” and the “Chinese dream”, the webisodes were published in 2014 on Radio Netherlands Worldwide’s YouTube channel and their Chinese site, Helan Online, through their Youku and Tudou channels. In 2016, Sino Philes won an Award of Merit from the Accolade Global Film Competition.
