Gilitte Leung

Gilitte Leung

Gilitte Leung studied fashion/apparel design at the Shatin Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) and first entered the entertainment industry through her work at the music production company Stattus. Leung, however, soon turned to filmmaking and attracted some attention with her hour-long film Ground Walk (2005), about two girls who fall for each other and end up spending a day together in Hong Kong. It took nearly six years before Leung was able to realize her feature film debut Love Me Not (2012). The indie film dealt with the relationship between a lesbian and a gay man who have been best friends for years but who find themselves reconsidering their bond when circumstances dictate that they move in each other and live together. The film employs a self-reflexive approach and includes a film-within-a-film through which the lesbian character, as a filmmaker, works out and addresses her relationship with her best friend by means of a fictitious cinematic treatment. Starring Afa Lee, Yip Lai-ka and Siu Wu from the band Yellow, Love Me Not screened at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival – where it was warmly received – and played at a number of international film festivals, including at BAFICI (Argentina), Karlovy Vary, Stockholm, and San Francisco.
