In Dialogue with Ann Hui and Margaret Ng: As Time Goes By (Ann Hui, 1997)

22491831_1653498181381106_4906414598564198652_nThe MALCS Programme of the Department of Comparative Literature is proud to present an event on 17 Nov 2017 (Friday) for a film screening and panel discussion with director Ann Hui (許鞍華) and Dr Margaret Ng (吳靄儀). The panel discussion is about the hour-long documentary by Ann Hui in 1997, As Time Goes By (《去日苦多》). In the documentary, the director invites her university friends to reminisce about their college days and, in the process, engage in a discussion about education and local history in the colonial days. When 1997 marks the year of the Handover of sovereignty of Hong Kong, the film inevitably examines Hong Kong people’s sense of identity and their vision for the years ahead into the new future under China. Twenty years have passed since 1997, it is an opportune time to explore the differences between the “new future” they envisioned two decades ago and the impending reality that Hong Kong people are experiencing in the recent years.

Event: Film screening and panel discussion
Date: 17 November 2017 (Friday)
Time: 18:00-21:00 (Film Screening: 18:00 – 19:00, Panel Discussion: 19:00 – 21:00)

Video:

Film Review: ‘Our Time Will Come’

• BY JONATHAN LANDRETH
• JUL 11, 2017

Every day while CFI’s Hollywood readers take in the business of the Chinese film industry, the actual movies can sometimes seem exotic or remote. But in major US cities, mainstream Chinese films are increasingly available: thanks to Wanda’s purchase of AMC and distributors like China Lion, they get American theatrical releases practically simultaneous to their premieres at home. Though they receive virtually no publicity outside the non-Chinese community, these films are more than worth seeking out by anyone serious about engaging the Chinese industry, understanding the Chinese sensibility and familiarizing themselves with China’s talent pool. Periodically, CFI will review and point readers in the direction of noteworthy US releases of contemporary commercial and independent Chinese titles.

‘The Golden Era’ Tops Hong Kong Film Awards

Ann Hui and her biographical drama “The Golden Era” were the big winners at the Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday night. Hui collected five awards including best film and best director.

The expensive, three-hour picture has been a regular winner on the Asian awards and festival circuit, but it flopped badly at the box office in both China and Hong Kong. Its continuing awards tally may reflect Hui’s efforts to make a large-scale art-house film at a time in Chinese cinema history that is often described as a ‘golden era,’ for growing commerciality and the huge expansion of the mainland Chinese box office.
