International Women’s Day Recap & Our Next Event! – Reel Women Hong Kong (女影香港)

Dear friends and supporters of Reel Women Hong Kong,

Thank you for attending our inaugural International Women’s Day 2015
screening and discussion: _Where Are We Now?: Woman, Body and Space_.
Please find photos and additional recap from the event here [1].

On Sunday, 8 March, Reel Women Hong Kong curated and screened three
short films directed by female filmmakers from around the world,
including _A Stranger in Her Own City_ directed by Khadija Al-salami
(Yemen), _My Motherland _directed by Fazila Amiri and Hangari Amiri
(Afghanistan/Canada) and_ Do You Hear the Women Sing? _directed by Nate
Chan (Hong Kong). Nearly 80 people gathered at Broadway Cinematheque for
the event, and the audience participated in a thought-provoking
conversation with Dr. Petula Ho from Hong Kong University and Vivian
Wenli Lin from Voices of Women Media, moderated by Reel Women Hong Kong
festival director, Sonia Wong.

Dr. Ho reflected on the theme of the event, “Where Are We Now? Woman,
Body and Space” drawing upon Alice Walker’s novel, The Way Forward is
With a Broken Heart_, _as a metaphor for the continuing struggle for
women to be seen and to gain traction in society. As a dancer, she
shared her motto of “Keep calm and ballet on.” Dr. Ho was particularly
taken by the story of Najmia, the female protagonist in _A Stranger in
Her Own City_ who goes against the grain in Yemen by refusing to wear
the veil and risks daily ridicule and harassment by her family and
passerbys. Vivian Li from Voices of Women Media spoke about the
connotations of calling yourself and being labelled as “feminist,”
sharing her experiences as an Asian American female living in San
Francisco and New York. A passionate discussion ensued with the lively
and inquisitive audience, and in attendance included a
Chinese-Indonesian curator from Belgium representing the Sideways
Festival and a local Hong Kong representative from HER Fund, among
others.

We are very excited to announce our next event is coming up on 26 March,
a special screening of _Egg and Stone_ with director Huang Ji in
attendance!
